Ask for help with problem regarding LED strip installation

Hi all,

I’m reaching out to ask for some technical assistance or guidance regarding an issue with my LED strip setup, which was built into my cinewall in February 2024.

I’d be very grateful for any input you might have, as I’ve already done some troubleshooting myself and worked with the supplier to resolve the problem.

Here’s a quick overview of the setup and issue:

  • Two long RGBW LED strips are installed in the wall and connected to a single receiver.
  • I’m using a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi module and control the strips via both a remote and an app.
  • Since a power outage at my home a few weeks ago, the colours on the strips have become partially unsynchronized.
  • For example, when I select green, both strips display correctly. But when I e.g. choose yellow or orange, parts show green while the other show yellow—resulting in a mismatched appearance.

The supplier sent me a new receiver and connector, which I’ve tested. I was able to unlink and relink the lights, but unfortunately, the issue persists.

I’m wondering what else could be causing this. One possibility I’ve considered is that the LED power supply might have been damaged during the power outage and is no longer delivering the correct voltage or power to all parts of the strip. Not sure if that can be the case?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or ideas you might have. My next step might be to consider replacing the entire LED setup in the wall, which would be both costly and a lot of work—so I’m hoping to avoid that if possible.

Thanks, Marcel

Hello Marcel.

You have two strips.
Is it the case that one strip always lights up correctly and the other always incorrectly?
Or does one of them sometimes light up correctly and a part of it incorrectly?

Like in your example with green and yellow: Did you select green as your desired color?
If YES, I would assume that the yellow stripe has a short circuit between the green and red connection wire. In this case, if the green wire is “activated,” red is also activated and green and red are yellow.
Check the following:
Select a primary color (i.e., green, blue, red) and write down which color the “incorrect” strip displays.
Find out which color you had to mix with the selected color to get the incorrect color.

If that’s the case, I would first check the solder joints of the cables on the stripe.

Hi Mike,
THANKS a lot for your response.
Now, crazy enough… I wanted to try things out and take pictures after your message.

And what happened now, might give at least some direction.

I used the remote control (not the app) to switch on the lights.
And all (!) lights and strips behaved correctly and were in sync / the same!
I changed colors multiple times, switched off and on.. it all was ok.

I thought to myself I will just start the MiBoxer app and delete the connected and will just continue with the remote.
I did not even switch the lights on..but apparently, opening the app already caused a problem.
Because, I deleted the device (without switching it on) and now, when I switched on the light with the remote, I have again the same problem.

So, at least - I believe - the strips are connected correctly and nothing should be wrong with them, right?

But now, I need to figure out if and how I can get this back to the correct setting that has just worked correctly.

I just switched on the lights yesterday evening with the remote, set the lights to a setting where all strips showed the same color green and switched off before going to bed. Did not do anything else.

In short, I believe there seems to be some interference between remote and app..or just a problem with the app.

Will try with Unlinking/Linking the remote..
Do you still have another idea?

From the video to see, there is something wrong with the 3rd led strip, because the problem is still exist even if you changed a new controller.
Reason is:
When light up Yellow or orange color, all led strips should work as Yellow or orange color, but the 3rd strip work as Green color,it is not normally.

The yellow color is mixed by Red plus Green color, now only light up Green color, it means that Red led chip of the 3rd strip is broken.
It is better to change the new led strip if possible.

I think Djoker have only 2 stripes.

If you only have one controller, it can only be a problem with the wiring or the strips themselves!

It doesn’t matter whether you control them with a remote or an app!

Djoker, how are the two strips connected to the controller? In parallel or in series (where series actually turns two strips into one).

There are more than two compartments on your wall.
Do the strips run in a zigzag pattern from compartment to compartment, or were they cut and connected with cables?

Write on each compartment which strip they belong to and in what order.
So:
From the controller, it goes to Stripe 1, the first compartment (1.1), to the second (1.2), and so on.

If the strips are connected in parallel, from the controller to Stripe 2, the first compartment (2.1)…

Are the compartments that are not lit correctly at the end of a strip?
Or is the incorrectly lit section an entire strip?

Good morning all and again thanks for the comments and time you spend to help!! I appreciate this!

@Mike_1966, your questions are I believe spot on and the ones that also a friend, who is Electrician, asked me.
Although it’s worrying me, it looks as if indeed the problem is with the strips.

To your questions:
I have two strips connected in series, so they turn into one and they end in one single controller/receiver.
Regarding how the strips run:
I have asked the guy who made the wall and installed the LED in February 2024 if he remembers how he did it.
He was not 100% sure himself and will send pictures, but is now on vacation until end of month and said he has them on his work device at home.
Good learning for me because I do not remember 100%, but I believe 90% that (considering you look at the wall) the first strip starts on the top left side, runs down the compartments, then to the bottom right (behind the electric fire place), and then up the compartments. And finally, the cables comes through the wall where I put the blue circle - that’s where I then connect it with the connector/receiver.

With the green circle, I marked where I remember that the first and second cable are connected and where he put them.
So, I believe to remember that the two upper compartments on the right side are also the 2nd strips. With them, I can get to all colors. Going through the colors, it looks that the “problem-causing”/missing color of the bigger strip (in the picture green color) is yellow..

Better decision would have been to put the part where the two strips are connected somewhere visible/accessible in case something like this happens. Also learned something.

If I need to fix it, he actually needs to open the wall :(( because I don’t 100% know where exactly the spot is where the 2 strips are connected to become one. So, I now plan to wait until he is back

Not sure if I can do anything else…
